Piano, gyms and more: dormitories offer all kinds of spare time activities
Serious workout in a gym, a few hit songs on a piano, one or two volleyball games or a ping-pong tournaments, barbecue combined with a picnic? The list of activities offered at the dormitories operated by MU’s Accommodation and Catering Services is pleasantly long.
The most interesting portfolio is offered at the Vinařská dormitory and its A1, A2 and A3 blocs. Two multi-purpose sports grounds (courts) are available for football, basketball or volleyball, as is a relax zone with a large lawn with metal benches and brick BBQ. “Each block has a gym in the basement, each with dumbbells, weight machines, exercise balls or exercise mats. We also have a ping-pong table or a music lounge with a piano. There is also a new lounge at A2 since this spring,” Faculty of Informatics student Lukáš Soják explains.
Most dormitories are conveniently located vis-à-vis the faculties the residents attend, which plays a key role with respect to commuting and costs.
The Tvrdého dormitory is within convenient walking distance from the Faculty of Social Studies and the Faculty of Arts. Its residents can spend their spare time playing ping-pong or foosball, at a piano or in a gym.
The Veveří dormitory can be found near the city centre, around the corner from the Faculty of Arts. Its residents have a multi-purpose sports ground at their disposal.
Students staying at the Klácelova and náměstí Míru dormitories enjoy the proximity of the park at Kraví hora and its city park, pool and observatory. The Faculty of Social Studies and the Faculty of Arts are not far either. The dormitory at Klácelova offers two gyms; one larger hall with a court for ball sports and another one with weight machines and exercise equipment. “We play floorball with friends a lot, and each year the dormitory council organises a tournament. The management of ACS was kind to approve further weight machines, dumbbells or parallel bars,” student of the Faculty of Informatics Andrej Šimurka explains.
Located in the quieter Královo Pole, the Mánesova dormitory offers a gym and the obligatory ping-pong table and foosball. The dormitories in Komárov – Bří. Žůrků and Sladkého – are situated near a public cycling path and an artificial swimming lake. Its residents can use a sports ground and, in the case of the Bří. Žůrků dormitory, a fully equipped gym as well.
